What Did Jesus Do When He Descended Into Hell

    1. Why did Jesus go to hell?

The Bible does not say what Jesus did when he descended into hell. Biblical accounts of Jesus descent into hell are found in 1 Peter 3:1820, Ephesians 4:810 and Romans 10:69. In these passages, Jesus is said to have descended into the depths of death to proclaim the gospel and to show his victory over death. The purpose of Jesus descent into hell was to redeem those who had died before his crucifixion and resurrection. He also proclaimed the good news of salvation to those in hell. By doing this, Jesus showed those who had died before him that they could still be saved through faith in Him.

The Bible does not give the specific reason why Jesus descended into hell, but we can speculate about some possible reasons based on biblical principles and other sources. We know from Scripture that when God created mankind in His image ([Genesis 1:26–27], NKJV), Adam and Eve were presented with two options—to obey their Creator or disobey him ([Genesis 2:16–17] NIV). In disobedience, they fell away from God and died spiritually (sin caused physical death) ([Romans 6:23], NKJV). Because sin separates humans from God, no one who has ever lived could go directly into heaven after death since only those who belong there can enter its gates ([Hebrews 9:27], NIV).

    2. What is the purpose of going to hell

    • Jesus went to hell to preach to the dead.
    • Jesus went to hell to preach to the lost.
    • Jesus went to hell to preach to the righteous.
    • Jesus went back and forth between heaven and hell a few times before finally ascending back into heaven, so he could prepare his followers for his eventual return by giving them a better understanding of what their role was going forward: being witnesses for God’s truth on earth in whatever capacity they were called upon (Romans 1:16).

    3. How long did Jesus spend in hell?

How long did Jesus spend in hell?

The New Testament records that “he descended into the lower parts of the earth,” and that he was there for 3 days. When you realize that this same passage says, “this man went to preach to the spirits in prison,” it should be clear: Jesus spent 3 days preaching to those who had died before his crucifixion. This can only mean that he preached for at least 2 days since no one would have been alive at their death on Sunday yet still needed preaching after Monday. Therefore, we know with certainty that Jesus was in hell for 2 full days and part of a third day before finally ascending back up again!

    4. Do we have scriptures that talk about Jesus preaching to the dead in hell?

There are scriptures that tell us Jesus preached to the dead in hell. We see this in several places, including Acts 2:22-24 and 1 Peter 3:18-20.

In these verses, it is clear that Jesus preached to the dead who were buried in Sheol or Hades. These people had died before Christ had risen from the dead on the third day, which we read about in Matthew 27:52-53 (see also Mark 15:37; Luke 23:46). Therefore, it seems reasonable to conclude that Jesus went down into Sheol or Hades immediately after his death and before he rose again three days later (Matthew 28:1-8).

    5. What is the descent into hell and how is it important?

The descent into hell is a critical part of the gospel because it demonstrates that Jesus is the only way to salvation. He went to hell to preach to both the righteous and unrighteous, and he was able to proclaim the truth about God’s plan for man’s salvation despite being in a place where there was no hope for eternal life.

The gospel accounts of Jesus’ descent into hell are also important because they demonstrate that other people saw what Jesus did there. The apostle Peter wrote about it in his epistle; Paul wrote about it as well (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

    6. What is the doctrine of the descent into hell?

What is the doctrine of the descent into hell?

The doctrine of the descent into hell is that Jesus descended to the abode of the dead, where He preached to the righteous and unrighteous. This occurred during His three days in between His death and resurrection. There are several passages that speak about this event:

    • Matthew 12:40 says “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
    • Luke 16:19-31 speaks about Lazarus who died but went to Abraham’s bosom because he was righteous while Lazarus did not go there because he had sinned. The rich man also died but went away from Abraham’s bosom because he had sinned much for his luxurious living (Luke 16:23). So when Jesus spoke about descending into hell (Luke 16:22-24), He meant going down to those in Hades where both good people like Lazarus were waiting for Him, as well as wicked people like Dives who lived for pleasure on earth but would soon be separated from these things forever.

    7. How can we be saved if Jesus preached to Hell after He died? Why don’t we hear any teaching on this doctrine?

If you’re familiar with the Bible, you’re aware that Jesus descended into hell after His death on the cross.

Here’s what happened: After Jesus died, He descended into hell (also known as Sheol and Hades) to preach to the dead so that they could be saved. The Apostle Peter writes about this in I Peter 3:18-20:

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God… being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.”

Peter says that Jesus “was put to death in the flesh but made alive by [the] Spirit.” This means that when He was resurrected from His physical body at Calvary, He became a spiritual being. This is why we celebrate Easter instead of Passover; it symbolizes our salvation through Christ’s sacrifice.

    8. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ, and Him crucified, alone.

The Bible is clear that Jesus is the only way to be saved and that there are no other mediators between God and man. There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

Those who reject Jesus as their Savior will perish (John 3:36). Those who confess Him as Lord and trust in Him for salvation will be saved (Romans 10:9-10). God desires all people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4), but not all are willing to receive salvation from the Lord (John 6:44).

There are many religions in the world today, but only one true religion—the Christian faith, which teaches salvation through Christ alone. The Apostle Paul wrote a letter to people who questioned his authority because he had been preaching about “Christ crucified” rather than “Christ living” or some other aspect of Christ’s life. He wanted them to understand that it was through His death on our behalf that we could have eternal life with God; therefore, it was important for him not just to preach about His resurrection but also His crucifixion!

In 1 Corinthians 12:3-7, Paul writes about how there are different members/churches within one body called Christ’s church. Each has its own function which contributes towards making up an entire body; yet each member cannot function independently without depending upon another part of itself working together with it because they were designed this way by God!

    Closing

The purpose of this article is to share the gospel with you. The message of salvation through Jesus Christ alone is not only important for those who have never heard it before but also for those who believe they are saved because they have done all the right things in their lives and are doing everything right now. The truth is that no one can save themselves or earn their own way into heaven – God has already paid for everything we need through His Son Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary.”
