Recall that prior to her marriage, Sarah got pregnant at the age of 13 and had her first child at the age of 14. Despite the distractions, emotional trauma, etc , Sarah refused to be weighed down. Today, Sarah is a source of inspiration and encouragement to women worldwide.
Commentinmg on the picture on instagram, Sarah Jakes wrote :
From the moment I learned I’d be his mom, at 13 years old, I tried to stop focusing on myself and build a life for him. I wanted to prove maturity and stability as quickly as possible. It felt like the right thing to do. I was wrong.
Because I chose not to focus on myself, I lost myself. My trauma was left trapped in my soul. It was begging for acknowledgment, nurturing, and recovery. It isn’t easy to raise another human if you aren’t aware of where you’re underdeveloped. If you don’t own your pain, you’ll transfer it to your children.
I did the best I could with my son. When I stopped focusing on making a life for him, and instead chose to heal in front of him, everything changed.
I recently posted a YouTube video that every parent or caregiver should watch (link in bio). I want you to have the tools that I’m learning to use so that we can break the cycle of unacknowledged trauma in our family lines.
We can only break the curses we’re willing to stare down. I’m proud of the woman I am becoming. It overflows into how I mother.
Moving him into his dorm felt full circle. Like we’d both survived growing up together without losing our faith in the possibility of what the future can hold.
