Prayer For Serenity

Prayer for serenity is a way to calm yourself down when you are upset. It can be used as a mantra or simply repeated over and over again in your head. It is best said by repeating the words, “Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.” Repeat this prayer until you feel calmer.

Prayer For Serenity

Living one day at a time

As you approach each day, remember that we are not promised tomorrow and that today is all we have. The past is gone and the future is uncertain, so it makes sense to live life one day at a time.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t plan your future or make plans for tomorrow or next year, but when things don’t go according to plan it’s okay to adjust those plans!

Don’t dwell on yesterday; learn from mistakes and move forward with positivity in your heart. Don’t worry about what happened last year; look forward to what will happen this year!

Enjoying one moment at a time

Serenity prayer, a Christian prayer that is often associated with 12-step programs, encourages you to focus on one moment at a time. This exercise can help you enjoy the present moment without worrying about the future or past.

The first step of this exercise is to sit in silence and become aware of your breathing. Focus on each breath as it goes in and out, thinking only about each breath until all thoughts are gone from your head. Once you feel relaxed and no longer have any thoughts running through your mind, imagine an image of yourself floating in space above Earth’s atmosphere looking down onto our planet below as if it were an ocean or lake below with beautiful scenery everywhere around us like colorful flowers blooming all over everywhere…

Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace

Acceptance of hardship is the first step to peace. Acceptance is not the same as resignation, giving up, or giving in.

Acceptance does not mean that you approve of the situation, but it does mean that you acknowledge what is happening and accept its reality. The fact that you cannot change something does not mean that there is nothing you can do about it; acceptance means allowing yourself to acknowledge what is happening and then taking action to change your reaction to it rather than being controlled by it. In other words, acceptance allows for both an active response as well as a relaxation into the acceptance of things as they are right now without judging them or worrying about them too much (which would only make matters worse).

Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.

There are many world-changing projects, good and worthy causes, that you may undertake. As you do these things, remember to take them as they come. They will be messy; they will have unexpected details; they will require patience and dedication. Do not expect them to go according to plan or even in a straight line.

Take this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it—that is the main rule of prayer for serenity. This does not mean that we should limit our efforts for peace by accepting injustice and oppression elsewhere in the world. Rather, it means that if we want to bring about change in others’ lives or in our own without being dragged down by anger and frustration from time spent on smaller matters than those big ones we’re working on (injustice), then we must accept that sometimes doing what’s right requires us to accept hardships along the way towards doing what’s right (hardship).

Trusting that he will make all things right if I surrender to His Will.

As you continue to pray for serenity, ask yourself if there is anything that you are doing that is out of sync with God’s plan. Are there people you should let go? Is it time for a change of job or home? If so, trust that he will make all things right if I surrender to His Will–even though the answer may not be what I want it to be.

Continuing in prayer, ask yourself:

  • Am I being selfish when I try to control everything?
  • Do I have faith and trust in God’s plan for my life?
  • How can I improve my relationship with others by letting go of control issues and trusting more fully in his goodness?

That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
