    Oswald Chambers was a Scottish Baptist Evangelist, Preacher, and Teacher who significantly contributed to the Holiness Movement. He is famously known for his daily devotional titled ‘My Utmost for His Highest.’

    Early Life and Education

    Oswald Chambers was born on the 24th of July 1894 in Aberdeen, Scotland. He moved with his family in 1876 to Stoke-on-Trent when his father was appointed the Home Missions Evangelist for the North Staffordshire Baptist Association.

    Oswald Chambers was baptized at the age of 16 and then became a full member of Rye Lane Baptist Chapel. Oswald Chambers studied at the Royal College of Art (formerly National Art Training School) between 1893-1895 and was offered a scholarship to complete his study, which he refused to accept.

    After that, he studies Art at the University of Edinburg for two years before leaving for Dunoon College after the great influence of the word of God by Pastor Alexander Whyte of Free St. George church.

    Death

    Oswald Chambers suffered from appendicitis and refused to visit the hospital, citing the need for beds by injured men in the Third Battle of Gaza. Despite an emergency appendectomy performed on him on the 29th of October, Chambers died on the 15th of November, 1917.

    Oswald Chambers married his wife, Gertrude “Buddy” Chambers, on the 25th of May, 1910. Three years later, they had their only child Kathleen Chambers.
