THEME: Effective Delegation: A Leadership Secret (II)

SCRIPTURE: “18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 16:18-19

Yesterday, we rounded off with the counsel that, as a leader, you should not engage in doing all the work by yourself, stating that you would find it exhausting, counter-productive and unsustainable. Let us now examine the five delegation principles that Jethro introduced to Moses, which you should also learn and apply.

First, you should admit that working non-stop is unsustainable. Jethro told Moses candidly. “The thing that thou doest is not good. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee: thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.” It is important in leadership to admit when your strategy is not working and make a positive change. I give credit to Moses on this. When you overwork yourself and don’t delegate, you will end up impairing your health, sanity, family, career and ministry. Worse still, you will wear out the people too. So you need to change the strategy.

Second, you should understand your unique calling. God gave Jethro the wisdom to identify that Moses had a unique calling where he alone added significant value. He also knew that Moses would fulfil that calling better than he was doing by delegating some tasks to others. He advised Moses, “Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God. And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.” Moses needed to offload those things that others could do, so he could focus on those things that only he could do. The same is true for you. Identify the area where you add value-something that you are uniquely called and qualified to do? How can you delegate the rest?

Leaders who do not delegate often lack work-life balance. They develop high blood pressure and other health problems. Many have also died untimely of cardiac arrest and stress-related causes. However, when you delegate you will be able to focus on the mission and bring all available resources-most especially the gifts of other people to bear on achieving the mission. By so doing you gain and they also gain.
