Acquiring knowledge about the causes or danger signals of backsliding will help us to avoid falling into its trap. Today, we will learn more about the danger signals. You and I will never backslide, in the name of Jesus.
A man who loves and accepts correction will grow in faith and will not fall prey to the enemy. However, some people often refuse to receive correction. This is tantamount to rejecting God’s word and will. This is because the word of God is for the believers’ correction and reproof. The Bible says that correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way (Proverbs 15:10). Anyone who refuses to receive correction will backslide. Therefore, you should have the right attitude towards correction.
Failure to confess problems and sins is another danger signal of backsliding. The Bible encourages us to confess our sins to God and to one another. It frowns at covering up our sins. When sins are not confessed and forsaken, they will grow and multiply until they push the victim into the pit of backsliding and ruin. Proverbs 28:13 says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper.” Deal with sin by confession and repentance. Backsliding will not be your portion, in Jesus’ name.
Backsliding sometimes results from people’s failure to respond to God’s reproof. When God reproves or chastises a person, it is out of love and for the good of the person. The reproof or chastisement should be accepted with appreciation and the necessary adjustment should be made. God is not happy when He is angry and reproves but the offender goes on still in his or her wrong ways (Isaiah 57:17). The Bible affirms that he that is being reproved and hardens his heart shall be destroyed suddenly (Proverbs 29:1). So respond to God’s correction wisely and you will not lose faith.
Also, when a believer allows bitterness to grow, the result will be a falling away from God (backsliding). Bitterness is a negative emotional feeling and it is a counter-productive spirit. It breeds hatred, strife, division and destroys peaceful co-existence. Whenever bitterness shows up, it should be nipped in the bud through peaceful resolution. If it is not, its victims will backslide. Beloved, avoid bitterness. God bless you immensely, in the name of Jesus.
