John Piper Sermon Does God love Me?: what would it look like in your life to know that God loves you? what is it that will happen in your life for you to acknowledge that God loves you? will it be by getting a better job or by getting a spouse or deliverance from special pain. what if the definition of Gods love for us was not in any of these ways. god shows his love to us by letting us die in sickness. when Lazarus was sick and dying, his sisters sent a message across to Jesus saying, the one whom he loved was dying and Jesus said this sickness is not to end in death but for the glory of God.
When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed two days where he was and he let Lazarus die. he was motivated in this situation by his zeal for the glory of God to be manifest. how can this be any form of love in letting Lazarus die?
Gods love based on this text is his doing what ever needs to be done at whatever cost to himself or to us so that we would see and be satisfied by the love of God in christ forever. in John 17 vs. 24 Jesus said “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. This was a prayer that Jesus prayed for us to God, this was a prayer of love, God loves.
Why do we want to be loved by God is it to avoid hell, or to avoid having a guilty conscience or to have our broken marriage fixed back? if that is all we want, we do not know God, we are supposed to know God and fellowship with him, we are meant to be satisfied with God and fellowship with him. John piper wants us to know that there is no doubt that Jesus loves us, we must keep this in mind and stop doubting God’s love for us when things do not seem to be going our way.
