Robert Lowry

Robert Lowry was a popular hymnist and composer. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 1, 1826. His father died when he was only four years old, leaving him to be raised by his mother and grandmother. As a young man he became an apprentice to a shipbuilder where he worked hard each day until he could save enough money for passage to America. Once there he started a new life as an apprentice tailor in New York City until his health failed him due to tuberculosis; this sent Lowry back to Scotland where he recovered but decided not to return home due to homesickness from America.
