There are many different books that can be used to understand theology. But the Bible is the only book that actually defines the Christian faith. The Bible doesn’t just tell us what to believe and how we should live, it is our ultimate authority for those things. A good way to begin praying through Scripture would be to start with one of its four sections: the Law, Prophets, Psalms or Gospels. Pick a passage from each section and pray through them one at a time until you learn something new about God
How To Pray The Bible
What is Theology
Theology is the study of God and God’s relationship to the universe. Theology is concerned with who God is, what he does, how we can know him, and how his revelation affects our lives today.
Theology has three primary areas:
- The nature of God – what he is like
- The attributes of God – his character
- The work of God – his actions in history and on our behalf
Why Our Beliefs Matter
Our beliefs about God, ourselves and the world have a huge impact on our lives.
Our beliefs are important because they affect how we live our lives:
- Beliefs affect how we live and conduct ourselves as individuals – “your life” (Ecclesiastes 7:10)
- Beliefs affect how we treat others – “live with other people” (1 Peter 3:8)
- Beliefs also affect how we treat ourselves – “how you live with yourself” (Ephesians 4:22-24)
Our Beliefs About God Matter
We believe that God is the creator of all things. We believe that there is only one true God, and he has revealed himself as three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ was fully God and fully man in two distinct natures, both eternally existent before his incarnation as well as after his ascension into heaven. We also believe that he died on a cross to pay for our sins; rose bodily from the grave; ascended into heaven; will return again someday when he will judge all mankind at the end of time (John 3:16-17).
We believe that salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12) which means making him Lord over one’s life by asking Him into your heart (Romans 10:9-10). The evidence of salvation is not works but rather a changed life lived out according to His Word (1 John 3:7-8). It’s not about what you do but rather who you are!
Our Beliefs About Salvation Matter
As you can see, there are many beliefs that matter to Christians. The Bible says that we must believe in Jesus Christ’s death for our sins and the power of the Holy Spirit to bring salvation to those who trust in Him. We also believe that God speaks through His Word and that it is completely true and trustworthy, even though it was written by men who were not perfect (Romans 3:2). We also understand that God has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; not three gods but one God with three distinct personalities working together harmoniously to create everything (1 John 5:7).
We believe these things because they’re all found throughout Scripture—the very same book we read each day!
Our Beliefs About Creation Matter
Here’s what we believe: God is creator. He created the world and all that is in it, including you and me. He also created us in his image, so we’re made to have a relationship with him. The Bible says that man was not always on earth—he was created by God out of nothing ( Genesis 1:1 ). We believe in female empowerment and equality because Christ came into the world as a woman, Mary, first! She gave birth to Jesus who came into this world as male; however, according to John 4:24 , “God is love.” This means that both the male and female parts of our nature were created for loving relationships with each other—it’s not one or the other…it’s both!
We’ve learned these truths from studying scripture together over thousands of years; now it’s your turn!
Praying the Bible
Praying the Bible is a way to get a deeper understanding of God, yourself, and the Word of God. It’s also a great way to be in touch with your feelings. Here are some tips:
- If you can’t find something that feels right for you right away, try something else simple until you’ve got it down.
- Try different things until you find what works best for you!
As we seek to apply the gospel to our lives, it is important to know and understand a few theological foundations.
“The Bible is the most important book on earth. It has inspired more great literature, art and music than any other book ever written. Its messages are still relevant today and will be for generations to come.” – Pope John Paul II
Theology is simply the study of God. Theology helps us understand who God is, what He has done for us—and where we fit into His plan for humanity. As you may know from reading this blog, our ministry focuses on helping people pray their way through the Bible in a daily prayer practice called ScriptureSinging™. We believe that knowing how to pray the Bible is a vital component of ScriptureSinging™ because it can help us grow closer to Jesus Christ as we discover new ways of understanding His love for us (John 17:3). In fact, it’s important enough that we decided to create an entire course around it!

Clarity on our theology through prayer is a beautiful thing. It helps us know and understand the gospel even more deeply. The more we understand the gospel, the more we will live in light of it. Not only that but when we pray doctrinal truths, our affections are stirred toward God. In this way, prayer leads to praise which glorifies God and pleases him.
