In the midst of a culture that does not value purity, it can be hard to avoid sexual sin. The Bible is clear that any form of sexual immorality is sinful and wrong (Matthew 15:19). But overcoming this sin is possible with the help of the Holy Spirit. If you feel overwhelmed by sexual sin in your life, here are six ways you can overcome sexual sin through God’s power:
How To Overcome Sexual Sin
Pray for the Holy Spirit’s help.
Prayer is a powerful tool in overcoming sexual sin.
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to help you. The Holy Spirit can help you identify any false beliefs about sex and sexuality that may be holding you back from experiencing true freedom in Christ. He can also help you establish safeguards on your electronic devices, such as locking them with passwords or using parental controls.
- Pray for the power of God’s grace to overcome any temptation that comes your way, knowing that Jesus has already defeated it once and for all on the cross (1 Corinthians 15:57).
Understand that sin grieves God and the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a gift from God, sent to help you overcome sin. The Holy Spirit helps you love God and others, understand God’s love, and understand God’s truth. You need the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome sexual sin in your life.
Acknowledge sexual sin as a real problem in your life.
The first step toward overcoming your sexual sin is to acknowledge that it is real and serious. You have to admit that your sexual sins are a problem, not only for you but also for God. They are a problem because they are against God’s will, so they need to be repented of and avoided in the future. They are also a problem because they’re wrong in themselves–we should all strive to avoid hurting ourselves or others unnecessarily, and this includes our bodies! Finally, it’s important not to look at these sins as just another vice or bad habit; instead we should see them as something more than that: an offense against God Himself!
Pray that God will reveal to you any false beliefs you have about sex, sexuality, and relationships.
As you pray, God will show you any false beliefs that are keeping you from your full potential in Christ. He may reveal them to you directly through a Bible verse or story that speaks to the issue, through a sermon at church, through a book or blog post, or even through a friend who knows your struggles and has wisdom to share with you.
After being convicted by what God reveals to me in prayer and scripture study, I’ve learned how important it is for me to ask my wife questions about sexuality. I can get into trouble if I push ahead without asking her where she stands on something before taking action myself.
Establish safeguards on your electronic devices.
To protect your devices, set up parental controls on your devices to prevent access to certain websites. If you have an iPhone, for example, go into your settings and find the section for parental controls. From there, you can block websites that contain adult content by entering them into a list of approved sites. You can also set time restrictions on when these devices can be used—for example, make it so that they don’t work after 10 PM or 11 PM each night so that it’s not available as an option when you’re tired and tempted.
You should also avoid using your devices in bed because this is where many sexual temptations occur; if it’s not possible to do this right now then try taking breaks throughout the day so that you aren’t constantly staring at screens throughout the day (which may help with temptation).
If possible try avoiding using electronic devices altogether when in cars because most accidents occur between 6 PM and midnight due to lack of focus from driving while distracted by technology (this includes being distracted by other passengers who are using their phones).
Surround yourself with godly influences.
While you may be tempted to surround yourself with people who do not share your faith, it is important that you avoid this temptation. It is far better for your spiritual life to surround yourself with godly influences than to remain among worldly influences.
- Avoid people who are not Christians.
- Avoid people who are not supportive of your faith.
- Avoid people who are not supportive of your goals or values.
With the help of the Holy Spirit, you can overcome sexual sin.
The Holy Spirit is the only one who can help us overcome sexual sin. Without His help, we will not be able to do it. The Holy Spirit will show you the sinfulness of your sexual sin and the consequences of it.
You can overcome sexual sin! God is greater than sin, and He will help you. If you are committed to the process of change but find yourself struggling, don’t give up. You may need some extra help such as professional counseling or accountability partners to keep you moving forward and encourage you along the way. Don’t let Satan convince you that it’s not worth it–God desires for us to live a life of holiness and purity that is pleasing to Him.
