I never used to be good at praying. I think it’s because I didn’t have a plan for it. Things would come to mind that I wanted to pray about, but then I’d get distracted or forget them. Then one day, I learned about the idea of having a prayer list—and it changed my whole prayer life! Now, when something comes to mind (or when God brings something to mind), I write it down on my list and make sure that it gets prayed for regularly. This has not only helped me be more consistent with praying for myself and others, but also led to some amazing answers!
Step 1) Identify a specific prayer focus.
Prayer is a conversation with God. Prayer is communication with God. It’s a way to communicate with God and the Holy Spirit, and it can be done through words or non-verbal expressions of love and adoration for our heavenly Father.
The first step in making your prayer list is to identify a specific prayer focus. You may want to pray for someone else or work on your relationship with Christ by making another list of goals (see Step 2).
Step 2) Set aside a time and place to talk to God.
There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to finding the right time and place to pray. You want to pick a time when you have the least amount of distractions, but not so early that you’re too tired or hungry. You also want to be sure that no one is going to interrupt your prayer time, so if this is possible, choose a room with a door and close it behind you as soon as possible. As much as possible, avoid praying while in front of other people because they might think poorly of their friend who’s trying not-so-hardly at religion. Finally, try not choosing any times where there are deadlines or other really important tasks—prayer should be about making God proud and not about meeting some deadline for an essay due next week!
Step 3) Make your list, and then go over it with God.
Now that you have a list of things to pray about, take some time to actually talk with God about it. Go through your list and make sure that you are comfortable with the things on it. If not, add more or delete some. Your list should be something that you can easily read and understand in order to quickly find the prayer request that needs answered most urgently.
Step 4) Add or subtract things from the list as needed.
Once you have your prayer list, the last thing to do is to be flexible. If you think of something else that needs to be added, add it! If something is no longer relevant and needs to be removed from the list, remove it! You don’t need to feel trapped by your list; this is just a starting point for you and it’s okay for things to change over time.
In addition, don’t be afraid of adding new things that come up as you go through life. Maybe there will be a situation or event in which everyone prays with great fervor but nothing happens in response—that doesn’t mean that God won’t answer your prayers at all! He may still grant you what you prayed for at an unexpected time or on an unexpected day (which is why we should always pray without ceasing). It could also mean that while people were praying greatly against some evil force in their lives like depression or addiction, they failed to seek God’s face first so they couldn’t see His plan clearly enough during their time of prayer—and therefore didn’t get what they really wanted out of those hours spent seeking His face instead (2 Chronicles 7:14). In other words: God might have answered some parts of our request without granting us what was truly important because we did not seek Him first before asking Him anything else
Step 5) Keep the list in plain sight.
Once you’ve decided how to keep your list, make sure it’s in a place where you can see it. You may want to use a prayer journal or book that has space for keeping track of prayers and the answers you receive from God. Or, if you’re more tech-savvy, there are several apps available for smartphones and tablets that allow users to create their own prayer lists.
There’s no right or wrong choice when it comes to organizing your prayer requests—the main thing is that they’re organized!
Praying can be more effective if you have a plan for it.
Praying can be a powerful way to connect with God. It is a way to express gratitude and ask for help, as well as ways to help others and yourself.
A prayer list is a list of people that you pray for on a daily basis. You may want to create this list based on your interests and passions or those who are important in your life. If you have children, it would be natural for their names to be on the top of your prayer list! Another idea would be creating one specifically for each person in the family (e.g., spouse’s name, kids’ names). This can help everyone feel like they are being thought about every day by their loved ones during prayer time!
A prayer list is a simple way to keep track of what you want God to hear. It’s also a good way of holding yourself accountable for praying with sincerity and regularity. You may find it helpful at first to create such lists on paper, but there are also plenty of apps that can help you keep your prayers organized as well. Either way, we hope these steps will give you an idea of how to make your own prayer list, and that this resource has been helpful in getting you started!
