Do prayers have to always be said aloud? : The founder of Turning Point Ministry and the lead pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, Dr. David Jeremiah has been on the campaiign of answering questions on prayer. Do prayers have to always be said aloud? What if I say them in my head? – Dr. David Jeremiah

Proverbs 15:29 says, “[God] hears the prayer of the righteous.” And Psalm 139:7-8 says, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.” So we know that God hears our prayers wherever we are, even when our current circumstances make it impossible for us to pray out loud to Him. In these moments we must quiet our heart and mind and silently pray to our Heavenly Father.

As we develop a constant attitude of prayer, we begin “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:18). The “all” in this verse covers everything, including when we are surrounded by people. We can silently pray for our unsaved friends as we interact with them. We can pray for our church family as we walk into church each week. While it is good to find quiet times to pray, we can also pray silently when the noise of life surrounds us.
