And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”
Luke 15:2

One of the silver linings of the 1960s counter-cultural decade in America was the rise of the so-called “Jesus Movement.” Many young people, part of the hippie movement, began finding their way to Bible studies, then churches, in Southern California. When they showed up in traditional churches, they caused quite a stir: long hair, sandals, beads, guitars, jeans, and an unfamiliar vocabulary. Some churches were not sure how to relate to them and discouraged their attendance. Thankfully, many other churches welcomed them with open arms, resulting in many new followers of Christ.
When Jesus embraced the marginalized members of first-century society—tax collectors, prostitutes, and other sinners—the religious establishment was critical. But Jesus’ explanation was clear: “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance” (Mark 2:17). Jesus is still welcoming sinners today whether mainstream or marginalized.
Jesus demonstrates the depths of His love by welcoming those who others reject. Whenever you feel left out, for whatever reason, Jesus welcomes you to His table.
Forbear to judge, for we are sinners all.
